Marisa L. C de Baca
Jewelry Artist, Small Metal Smith, Leather Artisan
My name is Marisa L. C de Baca. I am a jewelry artist based out of Albuquerque, NM. Originally from Santa Fe. Being the daughter of an artist I grew up in the studio painting, sculpting, sketching, dancing.... Enjoying every bit of it. The start of jewelry making started on a elongated journey through Mexico in my mid-twenties. I never thought I would be into jewelry, as I never cared for fancy diamonds and pearls and only saw it as fashionable trends. But soon after traveling through one of my favorite countries I began to learn how much more jewelry was... Culturally, symbolically, historically. I started wire wrapping small shells to inlaying leather. Pretty soon I was living in D.F (Mexico City) observing incredible artisans who were creating jaw dropping pieces working in small metals. I was hooked. It was alchemical artistry. I came back to New Mexico about a year later and within a few years started working alongside some bad ass jewelry artists at Lauren Tobey's "Meltdown Studio" where I create most of my work now at my bench. I am inspired of course by nature, by the desert in her quite fierceness and the beauty she holds. Many of my creations represent that synergetic experience I have within that relationship and so much of the work is a collaboration with nature where she is the master mind. Each piece has its own story, it's own journey. I believe as an artist our work is the medium to explain that which we perceive in our minds without words. I hope it will speak to you. |
